How A New Year’s Resolution can impact your Mental Health

A New Year’s resolution is a tradition where individuals set goals, make promises, or commit to making positive changes in their lives at the beginning of a new year.

It is a way for people to reflect on their habits, behaviours, or aspects of their lives they wish to improve.

Common resolutions often revolve around areas such as health, fitness, relationships, personal development, career, or lifestyle.

Despite their popularity, up to 80% of new year’s resolutions fail within a few weeks and for some, failing a New Year’s resolution can have a negative impact on their mental health. Some individuals will feel feelings of disappointment, frustration and self-criticism.

On the other hand, it’s important to note that not achieving a New Year’s resolution doesn’t define a person’s worth or capabilities. It’s an opportunity for reflection, adjustment, and learning. Some people find that setbacks can be valuable lessons, helping them refine their goals and strategies for the future.

To maintain positive mental health when it comes to resolutions, we recommend these 4 tips:

  1. Set realistic goals: Ensure that your resolutions are achievable and realistic, considering your current circumstances and resources.
  1. Focus on progress, not perfection: Celebrate the small victories along the way and recognise that progress is a journey.
  1. Learn from setbacks: Don’t view setbacks as failures, see them as opportunities to learn and adjust your approach.
  1. Practice self-compassion: Treat yourself with kindness and understanding, especially when facing challenges or setbacks.

If someone is struggling with the emotional impact of not meeting their resolutions or experiencing heightened stress, it might be beneficial to seek support from friends, family, or a mental health professional. They can provide guidance, encouragement, and strategies to navigate the challenges and maintain a positive mindset.
