Tips for Coping with Stress

With how the economy is at the moment, you may find that your mental health takes a hit from the amount of stress you’re under. It could be financial, relationships or work related, but it’s important to remember you’re not alone.

In fact Mentalhealth.org revealed that 74% of UK adults have felt so stressed at some point over the last year they felt overwhelmed.

Here are our top tips for coping with stress, when things are hard:

Get plenty of rest

According to the Sleep Foundation, Adults between 18 and 64 need seven to nine hours of sleep per night. Adults over 65 need 7-8 hours. How many do you get every night?

Get creative

Find something that you love to do which will keep your mind engaged and active. Did you previously have a love of painting? Drawing? If you’re unsure what you could do, why not Google your local area to see what adult clubs are around. You may find a passion for something new in the process!

Eat well

Fruit and vegetables are your friend – Try to eat a healthy, mixed diet every day and drink enough water. You’ll notice the benefits straight away and will feel more energised throughout the day.

Be proud

When you’re feeling low, focus on the positives in your life and your achievements to date. You could even begin practicing gratitude and writing down one positive out of your day, everyday.

Talk to someone

It may seem like such a simple thing to do but start a conversation with someone and talk to them openly about how you’re feeling. This doesn’t have to be a friend or relative, it could be a trained counsellor, or help is at hand through the Samaritans, https://www.samaritans.org

It’s also worth finding out within your workplace who your Mental Health representative is and whether there is a Mental Health Policy in place to support you when needed.

We also have a Stress Management course which may be of interest to you, which covers an introduction to stress and why it’s a problem, some of the causes of stress and some ways to minimise the risk of stress.
