Introduction to Children’s Mental Health Week

Every day, children across the UK struggle with their mental health. Sadly, 1 in 6 children and young people have a diagnosable mental health problem, and many of these issues carry on into adulthood.

As a parent, we want the best start in life for our children and you may have wondered how you can support your child’s mental health.

How can you help your child?

We have put together 5 simple ideas that can make a big difference to your whole family’s wellbeing:

  • Get out and about – Fresh air, natural light and exercise can be great for lifting your mood.
  • Talk – take 5 minutes to talk about your child’s day and to discuss any problems they may have faced.
  • Be creative – Being creative is a great way for you and your child to express feelings, thoughts and ideas.
  • Switch off – turning off your mobile phones and other technology to spend uninterrupted time with your child regularly can be great for you both.
  • Be curious – show interest in the things your child wants to do. This will help make them feel more valued and understood.

What is Children’s Mental Health Week?

This February (7th– 13th) welcomes Children’s Mental Health Week, an initiative set up by the UK based charity ‘Place2be.’

‘Place2be’ is a children’s mental health charity that provides counselling, mental health support and training in UK schools, using tried and tested methods backed by research.

They believe that children should not have to face mental health problems alone, and offer a variety of different mental health and counselling services for schools, from expert training and resources, to support and understanding.

The theme for Children’s Mental Heath Week 2022 is ‘Growing Together’ which encourages parents, care givers and children to grow together emotionally, to adapt and try new things out of our comfort zone.

Whether you’re a school, youth group, parent, carer or business, there are many ways you can get involved in Children’s Mental Health Week.

‘Place2be’ has put together a variety of free resources, including virtual assemblies, primary and secondary classroom activities and fundraising ideas on their website. To find out more and to download the free resources, visit www.childrensmentalhealthweek.org.uk.

At BN She Consulting, we have a selection of Mental Health online training courses.
