Affirmations: What are they and how can they help increase your mood?

An affirmation is a sentence or powerful words put together to create a positive statement which is aimed to motivate you, challenge you and push you to reach your full potential in life.

We all have days where we feel down or not quite ourselves. Nowadays, social media and 24 hour access to the internet can make us feel negative by seeing the best bits of other peoples lives and wishing ours were the same.

The aim of an affirmation is to set a positive tone for the day and get you moving in a positive direction all day, every day.

Writing your own affirmation can make them more personal and motivating for you so this can be beneficial to lift your everyday mood.

Here are our top tips on how to write your own affirmations:

1) Write them in the present tense

2) Make them positive

3) Make them believable

4) Ensure they accurately reflect your priorities

5) Try to really feel them

A positive affirmation can be whatever you want it to be, but some good examples are:

– I am confident

– I am powerful

– I wake up motivated

– I am unstoppable

However, some people find it beneficial to tell themselves more personal positive affirmations, for example:

– I love myself as I am

– I am waking up today happy

– I choose to be happy

– It’s OK not to be OK

– I am proud of myself

– It is OK to say no to others

By shifting your thoughts to more positive ones, your self-esteem and confidence can get a boost. Even if it seems challenging to repeat positive statements that you don’t really believe, eventually, as you keep doing it, you start to accept the things you are saying to be true. We all deserve to feel confident and happy in ourselves and our lives and affirmations can be a great place to start.
