Looking after your mental health at Christmas

The lead up to Christmas and the big day itself can be full of excitement, celebrations, and social gatherings. For some of us, this is the most exciting time of the year. Yet, for others, it can feel lonely, depressing and leave you full of anxiety.

Think about one small thing you can do to minimise the pressure on yourself and help look after yourself on the hectic run-up to Christmas. Looking after your mental health is important every day, but especially during this time of the year when the pressure to be happy can feel overwhelming.

We have put together 5 tips to look after your mental health at Christmas:

1) Watch out for unnecessary pressure and demands – remember, it’s ok to say no. More importantly, it’s ok to say no without giving a reason or explanation.

2) Manage your capacity levels – be kind to yourself and make time to rest. Take a break from social media and remember you don’t need to be doing something every minute of every day. Rest is important.

3) Exercise – moving your body can play a huge part in your emotions. Getting outside for some natural daylight and fresh air can help lift your mood and help you process any negative emotions.

4) Remind yourself difficult feelings pass – you are normal to feel different emotions during the festive period, especially when life changes from regular routine. This makes you human, not different. It can help to spend time with people you love and trust. Maintain connections with people who make you feel good.

5) Ask for help – help is available throughout the festive period, including 24 hours a day on Christmas Day. Asking for help does not make you a failure.
