Eating Disorders Awareness Week – What is ARFID?

Eating Disorders Awareness Week is running from 26 February until 3 March 2024. This year Eating Disorders Awareness week is focusing on a health condition that often gets missed – ARFID.

Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) and is an uncommon and misunderstood eating disorder but it can have serious consequences for health if left untreated.

The exact number of people who suffer with ARFID in the Uk is unknown and treatment is not available to people who suspect they have it. That is why eating disorder charity, BEAT, are focusing on this for Eating Disorder Awareness Week 2024.

ARFID is an eating disorder characterised by a persistent avoidance of certain foods or textures, as well as limited interest in trying new foods. Unlike other eating disorders like anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa, ARFID is not primarily driven by concerns about weight or body image.

Individuals with ARFID may have a limited range of preferred foods, avoiding entire food groups or specific textures. This avoidance can lead to nutritional deficiencies, weight loss, and other health issues. ARFID can affect people of any age, and it is not always linked to a traumatic event or body image concerns.

Treatment for ARFID often involves a multidisciplinary approach, including nutritional counselling, behavioural therapy, and, in some cases, medication. The goal is to expand the individual’s food variety and address any underlying issues contributing to the avoidance of certain foods.

Beat are running an online ARFID Workshop on 28th February 2024 to raise awareness of this eating disorder. To find out more or to sign up, visit edaw.beateatingdisorders.org.uk.

If you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms of ARFID or any other eating disorder, it’s important to seek professional help or speak to your GP.
