How to beat the blues this ‘Blue Monday’

The third Monday of January has been awarded the most miserable day of the year due to a combination of post-Christmas blues, cold dark nights and the arrival of unpaid bills. Plus, this year we also have the cost-of-living crisis weighing us down.

Although for some it can feel very depressing, by being aware of the negativity surrounding this day, we can make a few changes to our lives to counteract the bad feelings and boost our mood on this Monday – or any day that we’re feeling a bit low. So, grab a cuppa and have a read.

  • Exercise – physical activity can lift your mood and increase your energy levels.
  • Get creative – switch off from the day-to-day pressures and enjoy some colouring, knitting or crafting.
  • Eat well – eating a balanced diet will help both your physical and mental health.
  • Get outside in the natural light – make some time to get out in the natural light. Even a 20-minute walk at lunch time can make a huge difference to your overall mood.
  • Consider a SAD Lamp – these clever mood-boosting lights could be just what you need to help banish the winter blues.
  • Spend time with others – being around loved ones is strongly linked to good health.
  • Look ahead – plan something to look forward to. Whether that’s booking a holiday or planning a few catch ups with friends. Having something to look forward to will have a positive impact on your mood.

If you notice you are feeling a lot lower than normal, it is important to see your GP for advice. Being aware of your own mental health, and others around you is important.

Our Mental Health courses teach you what mental health is and how to challenge stigma. They give you a basic knowledge of some common mental health issues in the workplace, and can offer an introduction to looking after your own mental health. They give you the confidence to support someone in distress and provide you with much more knowledge.
