How to combat ‘After Summer Blues’

In our previous blog, we spoke about the feeling of sadness some of us may feel after the summer comes to an end and the reasons why some of us may feel this way.

In this blog, we look at ways in which you can combat ‘After Summer Blues’ because knowing ways to overcome the negative feelings is important.

You can read some of our suggestions here, and if you have any of your own, we’d love to hear them.

  • Savor the Memories: Reflect on the positive experiences and memories from your summer. This can help you appreciate the time you had and look forward to future breaks.
  • Stay Active: Continue to engage in outdoor activities and exercise. Physical activity can help boost your mood and counteract the effects of reduced sunlight.
  • Plan Fun Activities: Make plans to do enjoyable activities throughout the fall and winter seasons. Having things to look forward to can help you maintain a positive outlook.
  • Maintain a Routine: Establishing a regular schedule can help you adjust to post-summer life. Consistency can also help with feelings of stability and control.
  • Consider Light Therapy: If you find that decreased sunlight affects your mood significantly, you might want to try light therapy, which involves exposure to artificial light that mimics natural sunlight.
  • Stay Connected: Continue to nurture your social connections. Invite friends or family over for gatherings or find ways to stay in touch regularly.
  • Practice Self-Care: Prioritise self-care activities such as meditation, mindfulness, or relaxation exercises to manage stress and improve your mental well-being.
  • Set Goals: Establish goals and objectives for the upcoming months. Having a sense of purpose can give you motivation and direction.

If you follow these suggestions to combat the winter blues but still find your mood is low or you’re struggling to feel positive, it is important to speak to your GP or health professional for advice.
