Reducing your Christmas Capacity this Christmas

Have you heard of ‘Christmas Capacity?’ Would you know how to reduce it if you felt overwhelmed?

Research has shown that when we want to improve our wellbeing and increase self-care, we try to do something extra or add something into our lives. This might include reaching our 10,000 steps daily or taking time to journal. However, subtracting something from our lives can be more beneficial on our overall mental health.

This is particularly relevant at Christmas. Demands and expectations are high and we often feel at full capacity. This can leave us feeling run down, overwhelmed and anxious.

Pressure, overcommitment, being exhausted, stressed and comparing ourselves to others are some of the factors that can lead us feeling burnt out.

You can reduce these demands by getting rid of the online Christmas comparison, the pressure to be perfect and the overcommitting which leaves no time to relax. Instead, try setting boundaries and realistic expectations. Factor in some downtime and set budgets or delegate tasks to free up some time.

Can you subtract unnecessary presents? Say goodbye to Elf on the Shelf? Or forget about those Christmas Cards that never get delivered anyway?

By making these simple changes and simply looking at what makes a good Christmas or what makes you the perfect parent, friend or sibling etc, you will see what really matters and how you can reduce your own Christmas Capacity to have a much more relaxing and happy Christmas.
