Looking After Yourself – The Importance of Self-Care

Self-care has become a bit of a ‘buzz word’, with people referring to spa days, trips to the salon and brunch with friends as ‘self-care’. Although all these things can be considered self-care, it doesn’t have to involve spending money or anything so extravagant.

Good self-care is basically taking care of yourself to ensure you maintain your mental, physical and emotional health, which will help manage and prevent stress. This can include getting enough sleep, regular exercise, eating well and practicing relaxation techniques.

Taking time to do things that help you live well can improve your mental and physical health and can have a big impact on helping you manage stress, which in turn will lower your risk of illness and can help increase your energy levels, leading to an overall healthier lifestyle.

There are five main benefits of self-care including:

  • Improving your physical health
  • Reducing stress and anxiety
  • Boosting your self-esteem
  • Protecting your mental health
  • Building and maintaining better relationships

Self-care is an important part of stress management. We are all less able to handle stress that life throws our way when we are physically or emotionally exhausted. There are many ways to practice self-care which will help us feel less stressed both physically and emotionally so we can handle other stresses in life.

Some ideas include:

  • Going for a walk in nature.
  • Taking a hot bath with scented candles and listen to soothing music.
  • Have a coffee and catch up with friends.
  • Tend to your nails. Give yourself a manicure or pedicure after a long soak in the bath.
