How you can get involved in World Mental Health Day 2023

October 10th 2023 is World Mental Health Day. This day, which is observed annually, is dedicated to raising awareness about mental health issues and to get individuals thinking and talking about their own mental health.

On this day, various organisations, communities, and individuals around the world are encouraged to engage in activities and campaigns to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health, promote mental well-being, and encourage people to seek help when needed.

This year, mental health charity Mind, are encouraging people to get involved by not only being aware of their mental health, but to act on it by getting the right support.

There are many ways to get involved with World Mental Health Day 2023 and we have outlined some of these ideas below:

  • Participate in Local Events: Look for local events, workshops, seminars, or activities organised by mental health organisations, community groups, or educational institutions in your area. These events may include discussions, panel talks, art exhibitions, or fundraising activities related to mental health.
  • Volunteer: Many mental health organisations and community groups welcome volunteers to help with their initiatives. You can offer your time and skills to assist with event planning, promotion, or on-the-ground support during events.
  • Organise Your Own Event: If you are passionate about mental health and have ideas for awareness-raising activities, consider organising your own event. This could be a panel discussion, a workshop, a mental health walk, or any activity that promotes mental well-being.
  • Educate Yourself and Others: Take the time to educate yourself about mental health issues and share this knowledge with friends, family, and colleagues. Encourage open conversations about mental health and destigmatise seeking help when needed.
  • Use Social Media: Use your social media platforms to share information, resources, and messages related to World Mental Health Day. Utilise relevant hashtags to join the global conversation and raise awareness.
  • Donate: Consider donating to mental health organisations or charities that work to support individuals living with mental health conditions. Your contribution can make a difference in the lives of those in need.
  • Advocate: Advocate for mental health awareness and policy changes in your community or at a broader level. Write letters to your elected officials, attend local government meetings, or join advocacy groups focused on mental health.
  • Support Friends and Family: Check in with friends and family members who may be struggling with their mental health. Offer your support, be a good listener, and encourage them to seek professional help if needed.
  • Prioritise Your Own Mental Health: Lastly, remember that taking care of your own mental health is crucial. Use World Mental Health Day as an opportunity to assess your well-being, seek help if necessary, and practice self-care.

By getting involved in World Mental Health Day 2023, you can contribute to the global effort to raise awareness, reduce stigma and promote mental well-being for individuals and communities worldwide.
